Darla, I feel for you on that grass digging. Jamie and I are doing the same thing and that St. Augustine is not coming up easy. On another note, I had no idea there was a white salvia, I've never seen that before. --Randy

Hi,
That butterfly photo is amazing, love that hibiscus as well. I am much slower at getting beds started than you. I started the one in my front yard, three months ago. STIlL have yet to add plants. I have labor intensive area, have to put hardware cloth under all my beds because of voles and critters like that. But that is still not my excuse for getting it done. Way to go!
One thing I like about reading other people's gardening blogs, is to watch the projects in progress. I learn so much from that. Thanks for sharing!

Girl I cannot believe you got that grass cleaned up for the extension! That would take me two or three days. Of course, it would be me doing it by myself.

How do you get these beds watered? Do you have a sprinkler system?

Susie said...

Whew girl, dragging the water hose to all those beds!?!?! That's definitely a work out! Of course, I do the same but I don't have as much area to cover as you.

I do collect the seeds from that hibiscus. I grew some seedlings this year and planted them around some beds.

Would you like some seed when it produces?

Looks great Darla! It certainly has been hot and they say it's gonna get hotter this week. I'm headed for the mountains for a few days though and hopefully some cooler weather.

Val said...

Wow you did some work! You must be feeling better. You better be careful though. Every Tuesday I think I am going to join this but I don't. Maybe next week.

That will be a grand bed once done. I always get SO excited when I enlarge beds or make new ones. Ah the possibilities. Stay cool!

Suzanne said...

Beautiful! If that isn't a perfect example of a butterfly bush, I don't know what is! Love the hibiscus too!

Teri said...

To get a butterfly to pose with the bush is awesome. All your blooms are beautiful!

HBT!

Everything is looking amazing. Did I not say that yesterday? Wow.

And yes this morning as I checked my blog I realized that it was Tuesday, and I had posted Wednesday. The calender hangs too far away to see the dates clearly.....

So happy ah...Tuesday, or is it Wednesday.

The butterfly picture is so pretty. I love the basket with the impatiens and creeping jenny, very pretty. Oh, my aching back. Makes it hurt just thinking about all of that digging :-) Wonderful, just think of all the new flowers you can plant now. I like the layout of your new bed and will enjoy seeing it all come together.

Catherine@AGardenerinProgress said...

That butterfly looks huge. Is the salvia 'Black and Blue'? I just planted some and it looks similar.
Your new bed looks like you will have lots of new planting space.

I can't believe you got that close to take a picture of that Butterfly, but it is a cool picture. I really like the Hibiscus, what kind is it? I would also like to say how brave you are for extending that bed out now, I would have waited until November-January. I need to weed tonight before my trip to KY and I am dreading it, ican't imagine pulling up grass.

What a beautiful butterfly photo! I don't know how you ever got all that St. Augustine up. I can't wait to see what you are going to do with the new area..

Becca's Dirt said...

Wow Darla. I cannot believe you dug out the bed yesterday. It is and has been so hot and know your weather isn't any different than ours. I hadn't realized there were so many salvia colors. Good photo of the butterfly.

Shelley said...

PLEASE tell me you are going to send that first photo of your gorgeous butterfly in to Birds & Blooms magazine! Seriously!!

I am so excited to see that new big bed all decked out!!!

Betsy Banks Adams said...

Who did you have to get permission from to expand that bed, Darla????? If "HE" mows, I'm sure he'll be thrilled not to have to mow that spot!!!!!

You all got alot done---and I'll bet you were SWEATY. Digging out that grass is not easy work!!!!! BUT--for me, I'll just sit here and watch the garden grow. I'm the lucky one!!!!

That aloe is unbelievable!!!! Mercy Me!!!

And that first photo with the butterfly is a WINNER.

Hugs,
Betsy

It's amazing to see how you chalk out an area (a big area, I might add) and just go for it. Good for you.

As I spent an hour out deadheading the daylilies (that have not really begun to bloom yet) this morning I thought of you. Wondering how in the world you keep up with the numerous huge flowerbeds you have.

Darla, It's going to be so pretty! It's a good thing that you have plenty of space for your flower beds. All your flowers are beautiful. I just wish you would bottle up some of that energy and seed it to me!

I can't believe how fast you got the grass up. Your bloomers are huge;) My garden is coming in slower than a constipated snail. Our weather is cool with tons of rain. I'm glad cause last year it was a drought--but the plants would like some sunshine.

~~Rhonda said...

Your flowers look so lush and beautiful. And what a job enlarging flowerbeds! But you will be so rewarded when it's done! Good job!! ~~Rhonda

Aiyana said...

The butterfly bush has such beautiful magenta flowers and your photo of the butterfly is outstanding.
You say you got permission to enlarge the planting area--is it part of a common area?

Boy, you've got your work cut out for you!! BTW, does anybody know of a plant that you can put in pot that will repel flies? We're having the worst time with them getting in the house everytime the back door is opened.
