Bloomin' Tuesday...

Crinum Lilies aren't actually lilies or even related to them. Like oxblood "lilies", Aztec "lilies", St. Joseph "lilies", rain "lilies" and spider "lilies", they are in the amaryllis family instead.

Large perennial herb with tunicate bulbs, often with large necks, stalkless, clump forming.
Zones - 8 - 11
Height - 5 foot or more
Growth Rate - Fast
Average Well Drained Soil
Balanced liquid fertilizer monthly
Full sun to partial shade
5' Long, light green, fleshy thick leaves

Flowers - bisexual, white, pink red, some striped or multi-colored, summer-fall, some fragrant at night.
Pest or Deseases - Leaf spots, caterpillars, grasshoppers

Now the white ones have a darker green foliage, the leaves are wider than the pink ones and they seem to take longer to open.Uses - Border, pots , bedding
Bad Habits - Foliage damaged by frost--Recovers rapidly
Propagation - Seeds are slow to germinate and reach flowering size, division recommended
WARNING: All parts of plant poisonous if ingested - handling plant may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction.. I personally have had no reaction from handling this plant.

The Crinum Lilies are lovely. It would be fun growing an herb that gets to five feet or more. I really like the directions that you include with your post. Great post.

The delicate pink mixing with the white is so pretty.

They look so delicate but guess they are very hardy. Any thing that deadly would be. Good post, I like new info.

We call these cannonballs because the bulbs get so big. I'm planning on planting these this fall and am excited about spring blooming. I don't like the mushy frozen leaves, but thats all! I've had them bloom unplanted too. Tough plants! Mine are milk and wine, with fat fleshy leaves. Thank you for sharing.

I love your lilies, as I was looking at your pictures I thought I must get some for next season until I read your line that its deadly. Oops, can't have anything like that with Charlie the Turtle roaming through my yard. But its such a pretty flower!
Thanks for sharing all that information!

The Crinum lily is so delicate and lovely. Not hardy in my zone but I enjoyed seeing yours.

I've never planted Crinum before but they are beautiful. I think my mother-in-law has some. Maybe I better retrieve some from her beds.

That's great info on them Darla, thanks.

They are lovely aren't they? Even if they take extra care...when we find something we like we are willing to make sure it survives in the garden! I feel that way about acid, moisture loving wildflowers! gail

I hope these made it through the cold too. I photographed some of these today at Seminole Park. The ones I saw there have some color to them, the ones at the condo are white.
