Honoring My Mom...

In honor of what would have been my Mom's birthday today, I would like to share a SMALL sample of the creativity she had. She passed some 5 years ago, I'm not exactly sure of the date. How come you ask? I believe my mind has a way of protecting itself from sadness. Since my first husband died 21 years ago and we were so young, I try NOT to remember sadness.

First, some of her paintings.

This is my Dad's favorite.
My Mom would draw the patterns, my Dad would cut the pattern out of wood and then my Mom would do the painting. They did a lot of craft shows.
Some Dollies.
She hooked this rug with scraps and a safety pin.
Ugly Dolly.
My Dad loves to fish. They made the shelf and the curtains too. There are shelves, bookcases and tables all over that they made together.
One of all our favorites.
One of her favorite trees. Does anyone know what it is? My Dad doesn't remember, he said to me, "Sister I just planted them where she told me to."
I love how the tops shoot off with color, like bracts on a Bouganvillea.
Thanks for joining me in a little happiness to the life my Mom lived.

Your Mom was a very talented artist. I love her bird pictures and the boat on the sandbar.

I don't remember 'bad' dates either. No reason commit a sad event to memory.

Hi Darla - thanks so much for your kind comment on my blog. Your mother was very talented. I often hope that when I go my children will enjoy the many things I made - sort of like part of me was still at home.

Isn't it wonderful that God gives some of us a second chance with another great husband to share our love and our life!!

What a nice tribute to your mom. I don't remember exactly when my mom died either. It wasn't the date the stuck with me, it didn't matter.

Your mom was very talented. I think it's great that so much of her continues to live on not only in your heart but in the things she did with her own hands. That's really beautiful. :-)

You are not even going to believe this. I have a pink tree posting tomorrow. Think it is the same type tree. I am also asking if anybody knows what it is.

The boat is my favorite too. But I need the sign about skin deep.

A lovely tribute. Your Mom made some beautiful things! My mother is getting very frail and I know I won't have her around too much longer, and your blog reminds me to value my time with her while I have it.

Hi Darla,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Your tree looks exactly like the kind I had at my old house. They were Golden Rain Trees and since they bloomed in the fall, they were thought to be of the Formosan variety (Kolreuteria formosana). Interesting that someone else called them Chinese Flame Trees. There's so many different common names out there!

What a lovely tribute to your mom.

Darla, I meant to comment on this post yesterday but I got so wrapped up in trying to figure out what that tree is, I never made it back to comment. I spent probably an hour trying to id your tree, I see them all over the place here and I've always wanted to know their name. I kept coming up empty handed so I'm glad Anne & Jean were already familiar with them.

Your mom's talent was amazing! I love the fact that she and your dad would work together on their crafts. Beautiful post.
