Today's Flowers

Some of the Mexican Sunflower Flowers I cut... aren't they pretty? I just visited www.floridata.com and this is featured on the front page, they are calling it a bolivian sunflower. Check it out.I have been told that this is a Purple Passion Plant, didn't know it was a vine and certainly didn't know it would bloom. Interesting contrast between the flower colors and the purple plant. I can't find info on this plant anywhere, can anyone help me?
I just hung it on this bench to see what it would do. My friend and her sister bought it at the Flea Market. It is interesting.

To join this meme or to just view other beautiful flowers from around the world click on the Today's Flowers Banner on the right of my page........Enjoy!

Good idea to adorn your bench with that beautiful purple plant!
Thanks for your visit.

The purple one looks like a plant I saw years ago, but don't have any ideas.

The Sunflower is beautiful, this time of year we don't have anything left. Winter pansies are the best we can hope for.

Hi Darla, I found this on Botany.com. Beautiful flower gardens you have. Vicki friend of Val @ Life's Litte Garden

Gynura - Purple Passion Plant, Velvet Plant
(Gynu'ra)
Plant Potting Supplies Gardening Plant Nurseries Yard Tools Gardening Ideas Flowering Plants

DESCRIPTION: These tropical plants are natives of Indonesia. They belong to the Daisy family, Compositae and will grow 2-3 feet high. G. aurantiaca produces velvety leaves covered with purple hairs and orange flowers, which resemble little shaving brushes. G. bicolor's leaves are gray-purple above and rich purple underneath.
POTTING: The compost should be rich and have adequate drainage. It should be kept moist but not water logged. They need light shade from strong sunlight. They grow well in a night temperature of 60 degrees with a 5- to 10-degree increase in the day. Plants that have filled their pots up with roots will flourish if given weekly feedings with dilute liquid fertilizer.
PROPAGATION: Cuttings can be set in sand or vermiculite, or in a mixture of sand and peat moss.
VARIETIES: G. sarmentosa; G. bicolor; G. aurantiaca.

I had a luscious purple passion plant last year. It is odd how it blooms those orangey yellow blooms this time of year... not anything significant but a great contrast. Mine didn't last through the winter... they are also proned to bugs. I might need to pick another one up in the spring - I do love the velvety green and purple texture.

After talking about them last night I went out and cut some for the kitchen today (great minds think alike I guess ;-). I can't help on the other one.
Hope you have a great week!

Those sunflowers are gorgeous.

I tried one of those purple plants as a house plant years ago (in my house plant period;) The leaves are gorgeous but as I remember it wanted more sun than I could provide inside.

Your blog is wonderful.
I like the first photo with Mexican Sunflowers in your vase. Its large yellow flowers are so lovely and pretty, indeed.
As for the Purple passion plant; I had that flower many years ago but I never knew the name of it. I’ve just learned that from you. I always kept this flower on the same place in my window. It looked fantastic with its soft leaves covered with very fine purple hairs that match great with its yellow flowers which, by the way, were quite stinky. I was really unpleasant surprised when I noticed that. When I moved into my new home many years ago this flower simply faded away and I never managed to grow it again.
Your photos of Purple passion plant are beautiful and it really looks great on that bench.
Thanks for visited my blog which I do appreciate a lot.

Hear is something about this plant that I found on the internet for you:

Step1
Grow a purple passion plant outside as an annual or inside as a houseplant. The plant can thrive in both situations. You can also grow the plant in a pot, place it outside from spring through fall and bring it inside during the winter.
Step2
Plant a purple passion plant in a pot, even if grown outdoors. The plant will spread outdoors and may get out of control. If you are looking for a thick ground cover, however, the plant will grow in the ground.
Step3
Provide a purple passion plant with bright light. The bright light is necessary to encourage the purple highlights in the leaves and flowers to form. However, too much direct sunlight can burn the plant, so if grown inside, grow in a west or east window or a south window with a transparent curtain. Outside, give the plant partial shade near a tree or on a porch.
Step4
Keep the soil moist. Water the plant when the top of the potting mix begins to dry out. If grown outside, the plant may need water every day to keep the soil moist. Inside, the plant should be watered at least once a week.
Step5
Trim the ends of the stems regularly. This will cause the stems to branch, keeping the plant full, and increase the brilliance of the purple color.

Hi Darla, Lovely flowers for TF. The yellow, Mexican sunflowers are so vibrant they really represent the sun. The passion flower is really interesting. I think in Florida you can grow most of the same warm climate plants like I do in subtropical Australia. I live about 100 km south of Brisbane, in a valley that was once rainforest.
In rainy days everything just grows like mad! Have a nice week.
