Grasses

Frances at http://fairegarden.wordpress.com has brought different types of grasses to my attention. I don't really care for the large clumping mounds of grasses in my gardens, although I love to see them in other gardens. I thought to myself, "Self, why not dwarf grasses in containers?" This is what I came up with yesterday.
In this container I placed, Toffee Twist-Carex flagellifera, Celosia (I know this is not really a grass just thought the red looked pretty mixed in), Bunny Tails Grass-Lagurus ovatus and Fiber Optic Grass.
I can hardly wait to see this Fiber Optic grass bloom. Can you see the little blooms at the tips of the grass? Reminds me of the Fiber Optic lights we used to buy at Spencers, remember those?
In the other container I placed Java Twist-Carex comans, Orange Sedge- Carex testacea, Bunnny Tails Grass- Lagurus ovatus and Variegata Vinca Vine (vinca major)
Hopefully they will fill in a little more. I really like the grasses in containers sitting throughout the flower gardens, might have to do a couple more! Thanks Frances.
Valerie, I haven't forgotten about your questions on candle making, I will probably answer them in an e-mail.

Nice combinations of grasses in those containers Darla. They have wonderful texture & interest. The fiber optics variety is very cool looking.

Hi Darla, thanks for the link love! Your choices are great, those containers will be gorgeous for a long time. I had the bronze carex in some concrete containers for several years, all winter even and the always were healthy and pretty. I love that color on yours too. Little bunny is pretty darn cute too! :-)

I do like ornamental grasses in my garden and they look great in pots too. We sell that fiber optic grass at work. The first year I worked there we had these cute little face pots so I planted some in them. It made them look like hair. They were very cute if I may say so myself.

I love the grasses. We have a big one I would love to move somewhere else but I think it is too big to move. I love them in containers too. I need to work on that. I was going to try to get my seeds planted this past weekend but didn't get it done. We are expecting a lot of rain the next few days so hope I can work on this after that. I am excited about it.

Great post!
I like the big grass clumps, pompass grass, to border large areas or seperate areas.
I'm thinking of bordering my garden area with them, so you are kind of walking into a secret garden type of thing. You won't know what's in there until you walk in.
I really need to get back to my flower garden. It has been neglected too long, because I just couldn't keep up with it.

I can't wait to see them all grown up! They're gonna be so pretty.

Did you purchase them from a nursery or are they something I can pick up at the box stores?

You did a good job--self! That is going to be an attention getting pot full of texture and interest.

Great idea. This is why I like garden blogs, ideas that I would never think of myself. I'm going to try this once the weather warms up.

I've seen that Fibre Optic Grass before, & I think it's just the neatest thing. I like how you've grouped the grasses in a container. I haven't tried growing grasses in a container - yet.

Hi Darla~~ Congrats on your blog-iversary. I love grasses in containers. Yours look terrific. As you probably know, another great candidate is Mexican Feather Grass (Nassella tenuissim).

Grasses are addictive. :)

Fantastic idea! I'm moving my vegetables off the deck and out of the containers this year, so I'm looking for some container combo ideas. I haven't grown any ornamental grass and am anxious to try it.

Well, while you are moving on into spring we have now turned COLD again Possibly snow. Might make good photos with the snow on top of the daffodils though.

Those are neat combinations in the containers. I grew those fiber optic grasses in floating pond containers and they did really well. I look forward to watching these containers fill out and mature.

Wow, what a neat idea...I am not a 'grass' type person myself, and didn't think I'd consider adding any; but your 'self' came up with the perfect solution! Now I may have to try doing this! I've seen the fiberoptic grass on a couple of blogs, and haven't heard of it til recently. It's quite cool;-)

I had to go back and look at the other bunny tail posts. So, I see you purchased this year as a plant. Ok, well, looks like yours is doing VERY well. Dwarf grasses in a pot is VERY smart! Great combo:)
